Conscience’s own Bandcamp identifies the project as originating from Leeste, Germany, and describes it as a synthpop project from northern Germany that has existed since August 1991.

The official promotional information states that Explain everything is an exclusive single extraction connected with the compilation Uncharted Vol. 1 (The Singles 2009–2023), accompanied by another new composition and an extended treatment containing numerous additional elements.

CONSCIENCE: MORE THAN THREE DECADES OF ELECTRONIC INDEPENDENCE

There is something important about approaching a new Conscience release in 2026: this is not a project suddenly discovering electronic music because electronic aesthetics have become fashionable again. Conscience has been working inside this field for more than three decades.

The project was founded by Rüdiger Illg in August 1991. According to the official Conscience biography, Illg’s early experiments involved the Commodore 64, a home organ and the short-lived project Agony before he was able to purchase his first synthesizer, a Yamaha SY22. An Atari ST, sequencer software and a small mixing console soon followed, creating the technological foundation from which the earliest Conscience recordings emerged.

That history matters because Explain everything carries the sensibility of somebody who understands electronic production not simply as the selection of preset sounds but as construction.

Conscience has travelled through changing technological periods: cassette recording, hardware sequencing, expanding synthesizer systems, CD-R production, digital distribution and contemporary computer-based recording. The official history records the arrival of a Korg 01/W in 1992 as an important technological development and the first official EP, Hardware, in 1998.

Illg is also a trained sound engineer and has worked as producer, mixer, remixer and musician beyond Conscience. Electronic sound generation has remained central to his work even while the technical palette has widened considerably.

There is therefore a useful distinction to make when listening to this single.

Conscience does not employ electronic instrumentation merely to decorate songs. Electronic sound is part of the compositional language itself.

And Explain everything demonstrates that particularly well.

CONSCIENCE IN 2026 — THE HUMAN ELEMENT ENTERS THE MACHINE

Conscience began as Illg’s solo project, but its present form has expanded.

The official biography records that Insa first contributed to Conscience in 2022 and became a permanent member in 2025. The 2026 album Suspended in time was consequently described as the first regular Conscience album produced as a duo, with Insa credited for vocals, flute and an artistic contribution while RI performs vocals, guitars and synthesizers.

That development is particularly relevant to Explain everything.

Although RI remains responsible here for the writing, production and instrumental construction, the additional vocals supplied by Insa on the original and extended versions create another human layer within the electronic framework.

It is subtle, but significant.

Where synthesizers are capable of producing extraordinary precision, voices introduce breath, individuality and physical presence. The relationship between those two qualities — technological precision and human imperfection — sits close to the conceptual centre of this release.

1. EXPLAIN EVERYTHING

The opening title track runs for approximately three minutes and forty-two seconds, establishing its identity quickly rather than using a long atmospheric preamble.

My analysis of the supplied master places the pulse at approximately 117 BPM, giving it a deliberate mid-tempo electronic movement: sufficiently rhythmic to propel the track forward but restrained enough to allow the arrangement and voices to remain central.

What immediately stands out is the clarity of spatial organisation.

Synthesizer parts are layered without simply occupying the same frequency space. Rhythmic components establish the underlying geometry while melodic electronics move across and above them. Textural sounds appear and recede rather than remaining permanently stacked.

This creates something close to architectural depth.

There is a foreground.

There is a middle distance.

There is an atmospheric background.

And there is space between them.

That space is important.

Electronic music can easily become overcrowded when production technology permits almost unlimited layering. Here, the arrangement understands that absence is itself a compositional device. Sounds are given sufficient room to register independently.

The rhythm operates with consistency but does not overwhelm the melodic architecture. Instead, percussion and sequencing function almost like a mechanical circulatory system beneath the composition.

Above it sits the vocal material.

RI’s vocal presence provides a grounded human centre while Insa’s additional contribution broadens the vocal dimension. Rather than treating the second voice as ornamental decoration, its placement provides contrast in tone and perspective.

There is consequently a fascinating tension throughout the recording:

machine against voice; repetition against change; certainty against uncertainty; structure against emotion.

This is where the title Explain everything becomes particularly effective.

There is an intellectual impossibility contained within those two words.

Human beings constantly attempt to explain existence through science, philosophy, religion, psychology, mathematics, technology and art, yet each explanation tends to reveal another unanswered question.

The song does not need to resolve that contradiction.

Its strength lies in inhabiting it.

Musically, repeated patterns suggest systems and order, while shifting textures resist absolute stability. Something familiar returns, but its surroundings alter.

The result feels simultaneously controlled and unsettled.

That contradiction gives the track its character.

2. SAVE US ALL

If Explain everything is the conceptual centre of the release, Save us all changes its physical temperature.

At approximately three minutes and fourteen seconds, it is the shortest piece on the single, but also the most immediately propulsive. Analysis of the supplied master indicates a pulse around 136 BPM, noticeably faster than the title track.

That difference matters.

The release suddenly acquires urgency.

The rhythm becomes more insistent, the electronic architecture tighter and the movement more immediate.

What I particularly like about its position as track two is that it prevents the single from becoming conceptually static. Rather than presenting three variations of precisely the same emotional state, Conscience changes velocity and perspective.

Save us all therefore functions both independently and structurally.

Its sharper movement acts as a bridge between the relatively concise opening title track and the enormous expansion that follows.

There is also something interesting in the relationship between the titles:

Explain everything.

Save us all.

They sound almost like two demands placed upon modern civilisation.

First: give us understanding.

Then: do something with that understanding.

That relationship may or may not have been consciously intended by the artist, but within the sequencing of the release it becomes difficult to ignore.

Knowledge alone is not salvation.

Technology alone is not salvation.

Information alone is not understanding.

The second track injects urgency into those questions without requiring a grand conceptual manifesto.

Production remains disciplined. Synthesizer textures are present in layers, but the stronger rhythmic drive alters how those layers are perceived. What appeared spacious on the opening track becomes more compressed psychologically, not necessarily because the actual mix has lost space, but because the faster pulse changes the listener’s relationship with time.

That is clever sequencing.

3. EXPLAIN EVERYTHING — EXTENDED EXPLANATION

Then Conscience changes the scale completely.

Seven minutes and forty-four seconds.

The title Extended explanation is almost mischievous.

If somebody demands that you explain everything, apparently three minutes and forty-two seconds are insufficient.

So Conscience tries again.

This is where the release becomes particularly interesting.

The promotional material explicitly states that the extended version contains many new elements, and listening to the supplied recording confirms that this should not be regarded merely as the standard track with extra bars added to the beginning and end.

Its approximate 117 BPM pulse maintains the fundamental rhythmic identity of the original, but the additional duration changes the listener’s experience of the composition.

Ideas are permitted to breathe.

Sections can develop beyond their radio-length function.

Instrumental components assume greater importance.

Transitions become events rather than necessities.

Repetition becomes hypnotic rather than merely structural.

This distinction is fundamental to extended electronic music.

A successful extended version does not simply make something longer.

It changes our perception of musical time.

The original Explain everything gives us the architecture.

Extended explanation invites us inside the building.

The additional space allows attention to migrate away from the vocal line towards individual synthesizer details, rhythmic relationships and background elements that can be less obvious within the compressed structure of the shorter version.

Patterns begin to function differently after repetition.

A sequence initially heard as accompaniment gradually becomes an object of attention in itself.

Small alterations acquire greater importance.

Texture becomes narrative.

The listener is encouraged to notice construction.

That makes this version arguably the most revealing recording on the release from a production perspective.

The longer arrangement exposes Illg’s fundamental interest in electronic sound as process.

The composition is not simply melody plus beat.

It becomes a system whose components can be rearranged, extended, isolated and allowed to interact.

For radio programming, the original version possesses obvious practicality.

For concentrated listening, however, the extended version is where the release opens itself most completely.

PRODUCTION — SCIENCE2 AS AN INSTRUMENT

The production deserves separate attention because the release is unusually self-contained.

RI wrote and produced all three tracks, performed all instruments, and recorded, mixed and mastered the project at Science2. He also created the cover artwork.

This creates a continuity between composition, performance, engineering and visual presentation.

The person writing the material is also shaping the sound.

The person shaping the sound is also making the final technical decisions.

And the person making those decisions is also controlling the visual frame through which the music initially reaches the audience.

Science2 therefore becomes more than simply the physical location in which the recording was made.

It functions as part of Conscience’s identity.

This independence has deep historical roots. The official biography describes the gradual development from modest sequencing and recording technology into an increasingly extensive electronic studio environment, while Illg has continued to work as a producer, remixer and mastering engineer.

On Explain everything, the benefits of that experience are particularly audible in the organisation of the mixes.

Nothing appears to exist simply because another layer could be added.

There is discipline.

And discipline is one of the most important skills in electronic production.

THE COVER — BIOLOGY, TECHNOLOGY AND THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF TOTAL KNOWLEDGE

The artwork deserves considerably more attention than a passing sentence.

The release sheet confirms that the cover was created by RI.

Visually, it is dominated by a brilliant circular form constructed from interconnected geometric lines. White structures radiate from an intensely illuminated centre while cyan, blue, violet and magenta light spreads across a dark background.

Around the central structure are smaller diagrams and symbols.

Most strikingly, a DNA double helix appears towards the lower-left region.

The image consequently merges several visual languages:

geometry, biology, circuitry, cosmology, diagrammatic science and something approaching sacred geometry.

It would be wrong to declare one definitive interpretation without an artist statement specifying one, but visually the artwork strongly suggests the meeting point between human biology and constructed systems of knowledge.

The DNA strand represents encoded life.

The surrounding diagrammatic structures suggest attempts to map, measure or organise reality.

The central light can be read as knowledge, origin, consciousness, information — or simply the point from which the design expands.

Yet the more intricate the diagram becomes, the less it resembles an explanation that could easily be understood.

That paradox is perfect for a release called Explain everything.

The attempt to represent total knowledge produces greater complexity.

The closer we move towards the centre, the more interconnected everything becomes.

At the bottom of the image, the title itself is presented in widely spaced lowercase lettering:

explain everything

It feels less like a command than a challenge.

THE SINGLE AS A COMPLETE STRUCTURE

Taken together, the three recordings create something more coherent than a conventional lead track accompanied by disposable supplementary material.

There is a progression.

Explain everything introduces the central musical vocabulary.

Save us all changes the velocity and adds urgency.

Extended explanation then reopens the original material and investigates it at greater length.

The sequence can almost be understood as:

statement → consequence → examination

That structure makes the release particularly satisfying.

The extended version does not replace the original.

The original does not make the extended version unnecessary.

And Save us all prevents the two versions from simply sitting beside one another.

Each performs a distinct function.

CONCLUSION

Explain everything represents a long-running electronic project continuing to investigate its own methods rather than treating history as an excuse to remain static.

Conscience has existed since 1991. That fact matters, but only because the music being produced in 2026 demonstrates that the project remains interested in development, construction and experimentation rather than simply preservation.

This three-track release is deceptively substantial.

At first glance it appears simple: one single, one additional song and one extended version.

Listen more carefully and another structure emerges.

The short version establishes the idea.

The second track changes its emotional momentum.

The extended version dismantles the restrictions of the single format and allows the electronic architecture to expand.

The production is precise without becoming sterile.

The synthesizers provide structure without eliminating human presence.

The voices provide humanity without dominating the instrumental construction.

And the artwork visually mirrors exactly the kind of questions raised by the title: where biology, technology, knowledge, consciousness and human curiosity intersect.

Perhaps the most appropriate thing about Explain everything is that it ultimately doesn’t.

It creates more questions.

And sometimes that is exactly what intelligent electronic music should do.

Conscience — Germany 🇩🇪 — remains a project concerned not only with how electronic music sounds, but with how sound can be organised into ideas.

For me, the extended version is particularly significant. It demonstrates how much additional information can exist inside a composition when the restrictions of conventional single length are removed. But the three recordings are strongest heard together, because each illuminates the others.

Explain everything is therefore not simply one song presented twice.

It is a compact study of repetition, development, technology, voice, structure and time.

And after more than three decades of Conscience, there is still clearly plenty left to explain.
