THE QUINSY 🇷🇺 RUSSIA — “AN HOUR LIKE A YEAR”

2026 Version / Artem Scout Remix — Single Review

Review by Gordon Lawrence Taylor — Infectious Unease Radio / Voice In The Void

There are songs that return because nostalgia demands it, and there are songs that return because time has changed the meaning inside them. The Quinsy’s “An Hour Like A Year” belongs firmly to the latter category. Issued on 3 October 2026, the release arrives as The Quinsy mark their 25th anniversary, with the band themselves describing it as a small anniversary release and inviting Infectious Unease Radio to play it. The Quinsy(RUSSIA) – An like ye…

The roots of the song stretch back to the band’s 2023 album of the same name, but this is not simply an archival reappearance. The new release presents two distinct readings: “An Hour Like A Year (2026 Version)” and an Artem Scout remix. Together they operate almost like parallel memories of the same event — one retaining the physical weight and emotional architecture of the song, the other rearranging that material through electronics, rhythm and altered space.

The Quinsy emerged from Saint Petersburg, Russia 🇷🇺, founded by Vladimir Tkebuchava / Vova 4.44 in 2001. Their official Bandcamp biography identifies the project with post-punk and psychedelic music, while the band’s recent history has also become geographically more complicated: some current Bandcamp pages describe The Quinsy as originating in Saint Petersburg and now based in Rustavi, Georgia 🇬🇪. Earlier releases and biographies identify them unequivocally as Russian, and the material supplied directly for this release also identifies them as The Quinsy (Russia). The Quinsy

That history matters here. Twenty-five years is long enough for a piece of music to stop being merely a composition and become a marker of distance: between places, people, versions of oneself and different periods of the band’s existence.

“An Hour Like A Year” — 2026 Version

The 2026 version begins with momentum rather than ceremony. There is no attempt to inflate the track into an anniversary monument. Instead, The Quinsy preserve the song’s directness: a taut post-punk pulse, guitar lines that carry both abrasion and melody, a persistent bass foundation and programming that reinforces rather than sanitises the track.

At approximately 136 BPM, there is a strong forward movement beneath the darker emotional atmosphere. That contradiction is central to the recording. The song feels psychologically heavy while its rhythm refuses to remain static. It moves.

The vocal sits with characteristic restraint inside the arrangement. Rather than chasing theatrical darkness, the delivery feels tired, confrontational and strangely intimate. The effect suits the title perfectly. An hour becoming a year is not presented as fantasy; it becomes an emotional measurement — the experience of waiting, remembering, enduring or existing inside a period that refuses to pass normally.

The original 2023 album already contained the English line “every hour is like a year”, embedded within material preoccupied with repetition, memory, aggression, alienation and starting again. The Quinsy In the 2026 recording, that phrase acquires extra weight simply because of elapsed time. A band formed in 2001 is now looking at the same idea from the other side of a quarter-century.

The guitars deserve particular attention. They are not used merely as a Gothic texture. They scratch across the arrangement, creating movement and tension while leaving sufficient room for the electronic architecture underneath. The production does not polish away the edges. There remains something physical and slightly unstable in the sound, which is exactly where the track gains much of its personality.

There is also considerable use of repetition, but repetition here is structural rather than lazy. Figures return, rhythms circle back and phrases appear to lock themselves into the listener’s consciousness. This creates the sensation of being trapped inside a thought — appropriate for a song concerned with distorted time.

By its closing passages, the recording has not necessarily provided resolution. Instead, it has reinforced the central state of the song: movement without complete escape.

“An Hour Like A Year” — Artem Scout Remix

The Artem Scout remix takes the same emotional material and changes its centre of gravity.

Scout has worked with The Quinsy before. Recent releases include his remixes of “In A White Room,” “Not Real,” “Неинтересно” and “You Know I’m Sick,” establishing an ongoing creative connection rather than a one-off remix commission. The Quinsy

Here, the remix does not simply add a stronger electronic beat beneath the original track. It reconstructs the environment surrounding the song.

The rhythm becomes more pronounced and electronically defined. Where the 2026 band version feels grounded in guitar, bass and bodily momentum, Scout creates greater separation between the elements. The track gains a colder spatial quality: voices, percussion and electronic details seem to occupy different depths inside the mix.

Importantly, the remix keeps the darker emotional centre intact.

That is the difference between a useful remix and simple club conversion. Scout does not erase the psychology of the source material. Instead, the remix emphasises its dissociative qualities. The repeated vocal elements begin to sound less like conventional verses and more like thoughts resurfacing from somewhere behind the rhythm.

There is an almost hypnotic persistence to the arrangement. Small details appear, disappear and return. Percussion acts not only as propulsion but as architecture, creating corridors through which the vocal and melodic fragments travel.

The result is less physically abrasive than the 2026 version but arguably more disorientating.

The original feels as though the listener is walking through the experience.

The remix feels as though the experience is moving around the listener.

That distinction makes placing both versions together particularly effective. Neither makes the other redundant. They demonstrate how substantially arrangement and production can alter the psychological meaning of identical source material.

Twenty-Five Years Without Standing Still

The Quinsy’s broader history helps explain why this anniversary release feels appropriate. The band have never remained entirely inside one narrow definition. Their catalogue has moved through post-punk, electrowave, Gothic rock, psychedelic material and electronic experimentation, while official descriptions consistently return to post-punk and psychedelic music as central reference points. The Quinsy

The project was founded by Vladimir Tkebuchava in 2001, and current Bandcamp information lists recent incarnations involving Vova 4.44, Vladimir Stolyarov, Masha Kosmos and Alexander Goshadze, although line-ups vary across releases and different iterations of the official page. The Quinsy

That long period of change makes “An Hour Like A Year” an interesting anniversary choice. It does not announce twenty-five years through a retrospective compilation or an obvious celebratory anthem. Instead, it returns to one song about the experience of time itself.

There is something fitting in that.

Twenty-five years can disappear quickly when viewed retrospectively. Yet within those twenty-five years are thousands of individual hours that, under the wrong circumstances, can indeed feel like years.

The title therefore works on several levels in 2026.

It is personal.

It is psychological.

And now, whether intentionally or otherwise, it has become historical.

Artwork

The cover reinforces those ideas beautifully.

A lone cat stands on an elongated checkerboard passage surrounded by repeating arches. The perspective seems simultaneously architectural and impossible, drawing the eye toward an uncertain destination. Above it hangs an enormous human face, part observer and part memory, while warm oranges, browns and faded yellows are interrupted by occasional colder tones.

Everything appears hand-worked, folded, scarred and aged.

The image avoids straightforward Gothic iconography. Instead, it creates unease through scale, distance and perspective. The tiny animal appears to continue forward beneath something vastly larger than itself — an elegant visual metaphor for memory, time or consciousness.

Even the repeated arches contribute to the same idea present in the music: progress that might also be repetition.

You move forward.

Another arch appears.

Another square.

Another hour.

Another year.

Final Reflection

“An Hour Like A Year” works precisely because The Quinsy have not treated their twenty-fifth anniversary as an excuse for excessive self-celebration.

The release instead reflects something much closer to what twenty-five years of independent music actually represents: survival, alteration, repetition, geographical movement, collaboration, memory and the continuing desire to remake rather than merely preserve.

The 2026 version carries the song through guitar-driven post-punk tension and physical momentum. The Artem Scout remix takes the same emotional core into a more electronic and psychologically spacious environment.

Placed together, they become two perspectives on time.

One looks directly at it.

The other seems to dissolve inside it.

For a band whose story began in Saint Petersburg in 2001, “An Hour Like A Year” becomes more than a reworked song. In 2026 it functions as a small document of endurance — proof that revisiting the past does not have to mean living inside it.

Twenty-five years later, The Quinsy are still moving.
