Italian dark ambient solo project A THOUSAND REASONS 🇮🇹, led by Simone “Zimon” Sut, returns with his fourth full-length album, Ashes. Following the sonic evolution of his earlier works, this release revisits the atmospheric tension of Regeneration (2021) while diving even deeper into immersive, cinematic darkness.
The six tracks of Ashes—Unprocessed, Quantum (version 2), Ashes, The Shining (version 2), R’lyeh, and Vecna—take listeners on a journey through shadowy, meticulously crafted soundscapes. Each piece is a carefully sculpted world, blending industrial textures, deep drones, and subtle melodic fragments to create a chilling, immersive experience.
Unprocessed opens the album with layers of eerie drone and low-end rumble, immediately establishing a sense of unease. Sparse percussive echoes and shifting textures draw the listener into the album’s shadowy atmosphere, setting the stage for what’s to come.
Quantum (version 2) evolves this tension, offering a more complex and dynamic soundscape. Textures shift like an alien landscape in motion, with metallic strikes and subtle tonal modulations keeping the listener suspended in a state of anticipation. It’s cerebral, haunting, and undeniably atmospheric.
The title track, Ashes, serves as the emotional core of the album. Minimalist yet evocative, it relies on sustained atmospherics and haunting melodic fragments to create a meditative, introspective space. This track lingers in the mind, smoldering quietly like its namesake.
With The Shining (version 2), Zimon channels classic horror influences. Sparse motifs float above dark drones, generating tension and suspense without ever tipping into overt dramatics. The result is cinematic, refined, and subtly menacing.
R’lyeh, named after the sunken city of Lovecraftian legend, is an eldritch, otherworldly journey. Layers swell and recede unpredictably, creating disorientation and unease. Melodic whispers drift in and out of focus, suggesting stories lurking beneath the surface, making it one of the album’s most richly textured tracks.
The album closes with Vecna, an expansive twelve-minute odyssey that embodies the album’s core themes of darkness and introspection. Slow-building drones and shifting textures guide the listener through a labyrinthine journey, culminating in a powerful, immersive finale that perfectly captures the essence of Ashes.
Mixed and mastered entirely by Zimon, the album has a raw yet precise quality. Every tonal shift, every drone, and every echo feels intentional, reinforcing the immersive power of the compositions. The artwork, created by N.B.S. Imagination and designed by Zimon, mirrors the music’s aesthetic: abstract, dark, and haunting.
